OverviewBMJ is looking for an Editor-in-Chief to develop the editorial scope and strategy for a new, leading, open access, general medical journal. The new journal will be a companion journal to The BMJ in the BMJ family of open access journals. You will work closely with The BMJ’s editorial team and will report in to the Editor-in-Chief of The BMJ.This is a high-profile role within the BMJ portfolio of journals. As Editor-in-Chief you will be responsible for the journal’s content, as well as leading on establishing the journal’s scope and vision. You will lead on exploring and embracing new publishing developments and transformative technologies for the journal.The successful candidate will act as an ambassador, actively promoting the new journal, and upholding the highest ethical standards of publishing practice that The BMJ is renowned for. The closing date is 29th January 2021.ResponsibilitiesSupport the Editor-in-Chief of The BMJ and Publishing Director of BMJ to prepare a high-level strategic plan for the launch, growth and development of the new journalEnsure all content published in the journal is of high quality and within the journal's scopeProvide line management for members of the editorial teamRecruit, onboard and grow the editorial board membersAct as the main voice to represent the new journal within BMJ and with external research and clinical communitiesMeet with authors, reviewers, and readers to understand their priorities and needs, and the ways in which they are engaging with the journal’s contentOversee research/publication ethics issues, e.g., cases of author misconduct such as plagiarism, undeclared conflicts of interestQualificationsMedically qualified or a relevant postgraduate life sciences qualification, to PhD or equivalentSignificant experience of assessing clinical research manuscripts and the peer review processEditorial experience in biomedicine: commissioning and editing content for a clinical or biomedical audienceExperience of managing a team including direct line managementExperience in product development and strategy implementationProven critical appraisal skills, with excellent understanding of medical research methods, study design and publication ethicsFirm understanding of Open Access and STM publishingBroad understanding of open science and data sharingExcellent written and verbal communication skillsComfortable with public speaking and presentationsExperience of developing and implementing workflowsComputer literate including familiarity with online submission and peer review systems, MS Office and web searching, notably using key life sciences databasesWell organised, with ability to prioritise a busy workloadCapable of making sense of complex informationAttentive to detail and a quick learnerExperience using social media for business purposesA very high standard of written English is required to communicate effectively and professionally with reviewers and authorsIf this is something that interests you then please send us a covering letter explaining why you wish to be considered and an up to date, relevant CV.
