Who's Who at STM

Ian Moss joins STM from his position as Director of Public Affairs at the BPI, the British Recorded Music Industry. Before this Ian spent 12 years in the UK Government and was a Senior Civil Servant in the Ministry of Justice as Director of Criminal Justice Strategy following roles as Head of Strategy in the Department for Work and Pensions, Principal Private Secretary at the Cabinet Office, Head of Technology and Innovation at HM Treasury and Head of Broadcasting Regulation at the Office of Telecommunications.  Before becoming a Civil Servant he was a researcher in Parliament for a Government Minister and worked in the Office of Tony Blair MP during the 1997 election.

After graduation he was an elected officer in the National Union of Students in the UK, becoming a member of the National Executive for 3 years including 2 as Vice President. Ian has a BA (Hons) in History from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Business Economics from the University of Strathclyde.

 

Kim Beadle is Director of Financial Administration and Operations.  She runs the office based in Oxford and oversees administration in The Hague office. Kim's main priority is to ensure that both offices run smoothly and that all her STM colleagues are kept well informed.

Kim also handles the administration of the finances both receivable and payable.  She coordinates the STM Board meetings, team meetings and several STM Committees.  She undertakes the STM Board Elections every year and handles membership administration.

 

Lucy Derges joined STM in December 2020 as Manager of Policy and Research. She supports STM’s work by monitoring, researching and commenting on issues of interest to our membership. Her work is particularly focused on STM’s commitment to Open Science. Lucy also gathers research from members to support advocacy work and monitors the impact of policy initiatives.  She also supports Barbara Kalumenos in representing STM’s members in the Far East.  Lucy holds a BScEcon (hons) in International Politics from Aberystwyth University and is currently completing an MA Publishing Studies with Oxford Brookes University. 

 

Jo Dinnage STM General Manager Events and Sponsorship, joined STM in January 2008 as Events Manager. Responsible for event sponsorship and the organisation of STM events including seminars, courses, conferences and outside exhibitions. She negotiates with venues on meeting rooms, accommodation, audio visual requirements, catering, reviews contracts, budgets, liaises with guest speakers, moderators, sponsors and delegates throughout the duration from briefing stage to actual event. Jo manages the content of the events web pages and app, coordinates promotional material and provides onsite representation.

 

Barbara Kalumenos joined STM in July 2008 as Director of Public Affairs. She holds a degree of Biology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and has been working since 1985 in leading Sales & Marketing positions for various international companies focused on scientific information including Beilstein and Elsevier where since 2006 she was Director of External Relations for the German-speaking countries.

 

Carlo Scollo Lavizzari specializes in copyright law, licensing and litigation. He is an attorney admitted to practice in Switzerland, South Africa, England and Wales. Carlo's law firm is based in Basel, Switzerland. Carlo advises STM and other publishers world-wide on copyright law, policy and legal affairs, as well as some film, record and software producers. Carlo writes articles and speaks frequently about copyright and related matters.
 

 

Matt McKay is STM's Director of Communication. He is responsible for STM's communications (both externally to our audiences and internally with STM's membership), marketing and Early Career Publishers Committee. As an award-winning strategic communications leader Matt has over 20 years’ experience leading the creation of innovative high-level communications strategies and devising impactful campaigns that have enhanced the reputation and reach of organisations.


Matt is a Fellow and past board member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations as well as an assessor for the Institute's Chartership scheme. Throughout his career he has worked across marketing communications within STM publishing, transport and engineering.

 

Andrea Powell acts as STM's Director of Outreach and Publisher Coordinator for the Research4Life initiative, a public-private partnership which offers free or very low cost access to scholarly books, journals and other resources for researchers and clinicians in the developing world. Some 200 publishers make their content available through Research4Life, and the other partners in the initiative are a number of UN agencies (WHO, FAO, UNEP, WIPO and ILO), Cornell and Yale Universities.

 

Andrea was previously Chief Information Officer at CABI, where she worked for over 26 years, heading up the publishing and IT operations. While at CABI she sat on the STM Board for 6 years in the designated seat for not-for-profit publishers, and was STM Treasurer for 5 of those years. She previously served as Chair of the ALPSP Association. Andrea is also an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, and is a graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, with a Masters degree in French and Russian

 

Claudia Russo joined STM as Regional Manager Public Affairs for Europe in April 2020. She is based in Brussels, and supports STM and its membership in gathering political intelligence, developing public affairs strategies and liaising with European institutions and stakeholders. Claudia had been supporting STM and other right holders organisations as an external consultant since 2018, while specialising in digital issues. She holds a Bachelor Degree in International and Diplomatic Sciences from the University of Trieste and a Master’s Degree in European Public Affairs from the University of Maastricht.

 

Eefke Smit is the Director of Standards and Technology of the International Association of STM Publishers (see www.stm-assoc.org ) and coordinates the activities for STM members in the areas of technology developments and standards, such as the annual STM Tech Trends reports, initiatives on research data, text and data mining, access and authentication,and digital preservation. She coordinates the work of the STM Future Lab Group, and is the staff support for the Standards and Technology Executive Committee (STEC) as well as the STM RA21 Task Force. She organizes STM Innovations seminars in Europe and the US and series of webinars for STM members.

Representing STM in a variety of industry-wide standards organizations, projects and working groups, she serves as Director on the Board of IFRRO representing publishers and is Co-Chair of the RDA Interest Group on Data Publishing. She also represents publishers in advisory panels such as the CoData-ICSTU group for Data Citation, the NISO working group on Open Access Article Metadata, NISO’s business working group on Supplementary Journal Information, the DataCite working group on Certification Standards for Data centers, and is a member of Force11. She also coordinates the STM participation in the EU-cofunded projects, such as in the past PARSE.Insight and APARSEN (both on digital preservation) and ODE (Opportunities for Data Exchange) and on the Advisory Board of the 4C project (Collaboration on Clarifying the Costs of Curation).

Eefke has been active in academic publishing for more than 30 years (physics, mathematics, computer science) and in electronic product development (Scopus, ScienceDirect), holds a masters degree in public administration and started her working life as a writer/ journalist on research and technology (in NRC Handelsblad).

 

Joris van Rossum is STM’s director of Research Integrity since January 2021.
In his role Joris supports and coordinates STM’s research integrity and data programs - both integral components of STM’s mission to advance trusted research.
Joris van Rossum worked for several leading companies and organizations across the STM publishing space, including Digital Science and Elsevier, where he initiated and led a variety of important innovations and cross-publisher initiatives within the research and publishing ecosystem.
Joris holds a master degree in biology and a PhD in philosophy.

 

David Weinreich, Director of Public Affairs, Americas
David Weinreich has worked with STM to support STM's public affairs activity since 2011. In his role as Director of Public Affairs for the Americas, he provides strategic advice, messaging development, political intelligence and lobbying to help publishers communicate their positions and goals to governments throughout the Americas, with a particular focus on the US federal government.  He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Memphis, and published several articles in the mathematical literature. 

In a wide-ranging career, he has worked in K-12 education, academia, non-profit science policy and education organizations, and both the legislative and executive branch of the U.S. government.  His consulting firm, Weinreich Strategic Group, focuses on science, technology, innovation, and education policy.
