The Royal Society of Chemistry has a great opportunity for an ambitious and experienced publishing professional to join us as a Managing Editor within our Journals team, based in Cambridge, UK. There are two full time positions available – one permanent and one temporary (12 months). This is an opportunity to further your career in STM publishing with the world’s leading chemistry community, advancing excellence in the chemical sciences. What you will be doing: This is a key strategic role leading the editorial development of our hybrid nanoscience portfolio consisting of Nanoscale Horizons and Nanoscale (permanent role) or launching new journals and developing existing open access portfolio (temporary, 12 months role). Working with the Executive Editor, you will lead the strategic development of the portfolio in line with the wider Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing strategy, in terms of quality, market share, global reputation and customer service. You will be responsible for 2 direct reports. You will build positive and collaborative working relationships with key external stakeholders (Editorial Board members and Associate Editors) and key internal stakeholders (Operations team, Marketing, Sales). You will be responsible for recruitment and performance management of Editorial Board members and Associate Editors, be involved in managing and (re)forecasting budgets, and develop marketing plans to maximise the market profile of the portfolio. You will represent the journals at national and international conferences to ensure the best authorship and geographic diversity. What we are looking for: Essential:Experience in STM journal publishing, including commissioning; an excellent understanding of the peer review process, editorial policy and marketing.A good honours degree in science (chemical sciences preferred).Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Well-developed influencing and negotiating skills.Ability to lead and motivate individuals.Good organisational and time-management skills are required, together with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.Willingness to travel nationally and internationally.Up-to-date knowledge of and passion for the chemical sciences.An understanding of the Publishing landscape including open access developments.Desirable:Previous experience with Editorial Boards.Contacts within the relevant communities.At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we will support your development and reward your contribution with a great benefits package: http://www.rsc.org/about-us/work-for-us/#benefits.
