Keynote: Innovation 2.0: How the Cloud and the Crowd are Changing how we work Michael R. Nelson, Research Associate, Leading Edge Forum The tide is clearly moving towards more Transparency, Connectedness, and Collaboration. The Internet has entered the era of the Crowd and the Cloud. For the last four years, Professor Nelson has taught at Georgetown University, where he conducts research and teaches courses on The Future of the Internet, innovation, technology forecasting, and e-government, as well as consulting and speaking on Internet technology and policy. Before joining the Georgetown faculty, Michael spent almost ten years as Director of Internet Technology and Strategy at IBM, where he managed a team helping define and implement IBM's New Generation Internet strategy. Prior to that, he worked at the White House on Internet policy with Vice President Gore.

Innovations networks in Social Media: Creating Maps and Measures with NodeXL Speaker: Dr. Marc A. Smith, Chief Social Scientist, Connected Action Consulting Group Know who is becoming more important than know how. Networks are a data structure common found across all social media services that allow populations to author collections of connections. Innovation networks are created when new connections form among people who have a portion of a solution.
The Social Media Research Foundation's NodeXL project makes analysis of social media networks accessible to most users of the Excel spreadsheet application. With NodeXL, Networks become as easy to create as pie charts. Applying the tool to a range of social media networks has already revealed the variations present in online social spaces. A review of the tool and images of Twitter, flickr, YouTube, and email networks will be presented. In particular, innovation topics will be mapped to highlight the key people and groups talking about new ideas and opportunities.
Semantic MEDLINE Thomas C. Rindflesch, Cognitive Science Branch, National Library of Medicine Semantic MEDLINE integrates information retrieval, advanced natural language processing, automatic summarization, and visualization into a single Web portal. The application is intended to help manage the results of PubMed searches by condensing core semantic content in the citations retrieved. Output is presented as a connected graph of semantic relations, with links to the original MEDLINE citations. The ability to connect salient information across documents helps users keep up with the research literature and discover connections which might otherwise go unnoticed. Semantic MEDLINE can make an impact on bio-medicine by supporting scientific discovery and the timely translation of insights from basic research into advances in clinical practice and patient care. |
