The findings of our feasibility study for a 'Friends of Research4Life' entity.
Andrea Powell, Chief Information Officer, CABI

The STM- supported Research4Life initiative has been extremely successful for over 15 years in facilitating free or very low-cost access in lower income countries to the world’s most important scientific research, and has helped to improve the quality and impact of research, research communication and information management in many thousands of qualifying institutions.   In 2016 an ambitious Strategic Plan was published by the Research4Life Executive Council, which set out ways in which Research4Life could do even more to support the objectives of the UN’s Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a particular focus on the development of evidence-based policies and investment priorities.   In order to realise this strategy, however, Research4Life needs greater financial sustainability, and regular funds to enable it to rely less on volunteer effort and in-kind contributions.  Accordingly, CABI has been commissioned to carry out a feasibility study into the establishment of a fund-raising mechanism and strategy for Research4Life, and to test donor appetite for its value proposition.  This presentation will present the results and recommendations of that study, including a proposal for a non-profit “Friends of Research4Life” entity with a membership structure and fund-raising capabilities

STM lecture series #1:

The Accessibility Imperative in Scholarly and Academic publishing.

Digital creation and delivery of Scholarly and Academic publications comes with an inherent opportunity to provide these products in “born accessible” formats. Such formats would allow students and scholars with visual impairments and print disabilities, independent access to the materials they need for their research and studies, without necessitating sighted assistance or the requirement to request alternate versions.  So why do we continue to maintain barriers to accessibility?

This presentation will explore the current challenges faced by students and scholars with disabilities in gaining access to the materials they need. It will also examine the time consuming and redundant processes that academic institutions must employ to ensure the timely and effective provision of these materials for their students because accessible versions are not commercially available.
