“This seminar has been a feature of the STM programme of events for almost fifteen years and its basic theme remains the same. The role of production remains central to all companies in our sector and all changes in process impact on the internal organisation of companies and most significantly on their bottom line. My aim in putting this seminar together is to concentrate on areas of ongoing concern to those engaged in content management in scholarly publishing, showcasing developments which impact on players of all sizes both in books and in journals, and on the interaction between publishers and suppliers. The programme is not just for the big players but is practical as well as being very much up-to-date. Each session will include enough time for questions and interactions.
Anthony Watkinson, Centre for Publishing, University College London

To Outsource or not to Outsource? Tips and tools for the society publisher Caitlin Meadows, Publishing Services Director, Charlesworth Group The aim of this presentation is to provide context and background to demonstrate the benefits (and some of the challenges) for society/learned publishers considering outsourcing their typesetting/other publishing services. What are the considerations? How can implementation best be approached in order to meet immediate workflow and strategic aims, and also apply scalability and "futureproofing"? We present some practical tips and tools and case studies to support publishers through their planning processes.
Outsourcing and the Changing Face of Production Will Wilcox, Journal Content Management Director, Life Sciences Division, Wiley-Blackwell In the face of keen competition and low-growth market conditions, many publishers are feeling pressure to oursource all or part of their Production operation. As well as discussing some practical aspects of Journal Production outsourcing, this presentation will show how embracing it can benefit the company as a whole, while helping to prepare Production to play a vital part in the future of publishing.

What is new in Online Hosting? Hosting is no longer a matter just of keeping online journal content and making it available for purchase. Companies who offer hosting services are providing a much more complex menu such as provision for eBooks, semantic tagging, and new products beyond journal articles. A group of speakers from key companies will explain what is new, how it works and what is coming next. The following speakers are confirmed:
What's New (In Fifteen Minutes or Less) Kevin Cohn, Vice-President of Operations, Atypon This presentation will highlight three recent innovations in publishing platform technology, devoting five minutes to each of these disciplines: content delivery, discovery, and monetization.
Finders Keepers The importance of content discovery, semantic enrichment and the user in an online information economy Louise Russell, Chief Operating Officer, Publishing Technology The internet has transformed the way we undertake research, however, there is much more that can be done in the scholarly publishing arena to make the most of the web as a medium for content delivery. Using GSE Research as a case study this presentation will discuss opportunities to deliver authoritative content in new and novel ways – where the user and community at large drive digital strategy rather than the traditional content containers we are used to. New developments in the areas of semantic enrichment, search and discovery are important elements in overcoming the challenges of an exploding information economy; where information overload is the norm and visibility via the right discovery routes is paramount to reaching and engaging with your audience.
Dr. Jeff Deneen, Director of Sales and Marketing, Metapress
Open Platforms and eContent Integration Louise Page, Director of Publishing Strategy, Highwire,
Joy Moore, Chief Product Strategist, Silverchair Information Systems |

Focus on Books There are two speakers in this session, two of the leading international consultations on how e-books can be effectively produced. Now that for many larger publishers e-books are part of the same publishing process as journals, developments that impact on books can no longer (if they ever could) be of interest only to journal publishers and not with speakers of this range of knowledge. Bill Kasdorf, General Editor of The Columbia Guide to Digital Publishing and Vice President of Apex Content Solutions, will speak first. His title is EPUB3: Not Your Father’s EPUB. He will provide a thorough explanation of what is different – the options and the capabilities – with particular concentration on matters of particular interest to STM publishers such metadata, accessibility and MathML. The final contribution to the seminar will be a typical tour de force from Bruce Rosenblum, CEO Inera Inc. His title is Challenges in eBook production and he describes his mission as follows: “It seems that each week brings new eReading devices, and publishers are responding by making more books available in electronic formats. But as print moves to pixels, electronic books bring new challenges not found in e-journal production: internal page references, ISBN assignments, XML, and ePub3. This presentation will overview some of the challenges for book publishers and looks at some of the solutions that are starting to appear.”
