Scholarly Networks Security Initiative (SNSI): working together to combat the threat of cybercrime Cybercrime is a huge threat to the entire scholarly ecosystem and safeguarding data and privacy is paramount. Cybersecurity isn’t just an issue for publishers. It isn’t just a challenge for librarians. It is not just an obstacle for institutions or a nuisance for researchers. This is an issue for all of us, and a problem that we firmly believe can be best addressed sustainably and effectively together. |

Let’s fix this: what Article 17 of the EU Copyright Directive means for article sharing Globally, many debates are taking place as to what role platforms should take with regard to the content they offer or host. In the EU, a first step to regulate this environment was taken with the 2019 EU Digital Single Market Directive (“DSM”). This new piece of legislation, and its Article 17 DSM specifically, presents a very clear opportunity for platforms and the publishing industry to work together to enable the safe use of legitimate content and ensure a better experience for platform users. STM put together a working group to develop technical processes to implement the new obligations, to enable platforms to swiftly identify the content and respective policies in order to make sharing decisions in real-time using technology. In this session, we will consider the rationale and value of developing these technical processes and their functioning; provide a look under the bonnet to show what is involved and required for publishers and platforms to implement; share initial pilot findings and invite publishers large and small as well as platforms to join the program. Let’s work together to improve the article sharing experience for all scholarly stakeholders involved! |
