Dismantling the Stumbling Blocks that Impede Researchers’ Access to E-Resources

Roger Schonfeld, Director, Library and Scholarly Communication Program
Ithaka S+R

Scholarly publishers and content providers have made great strides in the design and usability of their online platforms in recent years. But content providers operate in the systems ecosystem of the licensing academic library, where a variety of intermediary services play a role in discovery and access, posing challenges for seamless integration of licensed e-resources. And, mobile tools are growing in popularity while many content platforms have a limited mobile offering. Researchers are being driven away from licensed e-resources to more open solutions. This talk will review some of the key challenges from a researcher perspective and suggest that addressing these issues should be an area of prioritization for the STM community specifically and for publishers and libraries generally.‪
